Just Go For It!

A Lifestyle Leadership blog….

What gets you jazzed? Gets your internal fire going? Gets you so energized you just can’t not engage with the activity?

Leap

Putting yourself out there and taking risks is a tricky one. Often times, we’re waiting for circumstances to be just right and in truth, most often they aren’t. Get present with yourself and really pay close attention to what you are choosing. Life has a way of mirroring back exactly what is needed; whether it’s the people around us, or the circumstances. Noticing what is and isn’t working for you can be a powerful perspective check-in.

A quote from Richard Bach that shows up frequently during a coaching conversation; “Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they’ll be yours”. Having the awareness that we can talk ourselves out of what we may want dearly can be a springboard to shifting our behaviors and/or attitudes towards an alternate outcome.

Steve Jobs said it best: “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”

  • What brings a smile to your face?
  • What energizes and ignites your spirit?
  • Looking back on your peak moments in life – what was happening?
  • What is it time to stop doing? Start doing?

A couple of my favorite coaching isms that may help in the quandary of indecision are “control your controllables” and “know the difference between being attached to a goal and being committed to a goal”. Sometimes we have to recalibrate but we’ll never know if we don’t take that chance. As the Chinese proverb goes – Fall down 7 get up 8.

Stepping Stones

A Lifestyle Leadership Blog…

Stepping Stones; those moments in our lives that give us a placeholder by which to measure surrounding events. They forever change us and represent a variety of experiences.

With the dawning of social media, the option to share these events with our circle of VIP’s all at once has become a reality should we choose these forums. Recently I opted to add the second timeline post to my Facebook page positioning just such a placeholder. Facebook calls them “life events”. Our daughter and her husband gave life to our first grandchild, Ivy. This little bundle of joy has forever altered their paths highlighting a joyous life event that touches many lives in their circle.

While visiting in Vancouver after this blessed event, I had the opportunity to spend some time with my BFF between Ivy bonding visits. We got to talking one afternoon about this very subject and she referenced two of her recent life event placeholders. BBC; before breast cancer and ABC; after breast cancer. Heartbreaking and joyous life events forever altering perspectives and choices on her path as well as touching the lives of those close to her.

Stepping stones in life give us the opportunity to take a pause and notice the direction our path is taking us. My favorite all time coaching question, “What is here now?” comes to mind as we slow down and take that pause in time to get centered. Whether these life events happen directly to us or to those we are intimately connected to, they will often provide an opportunity for deep self reflection, interpersonal growth and lessons learned. Some questions you may ask yourself might be…

• Is it time for a course correction?
• Is there something not yet complete?
• Is it a moment in time to re-evaluate core beliefs?

The decisions we make during these life altering moments can forever shape a new path. So take the time – be present and choose from a place of centered love. We never know where the next stepping stone in life is going to take us, sometimes we can prepare for them and sometimes they just show up. Either way, how we respond will ultimately determine our experience of the current and future events surrounding these momentous placeholders.

Designing your “what’s next” magical experience in 2013….

Living in the Tropics; life and leadership lessons explored

Happy New Year Everyone!

I just love this quote!!!

Two years ago at this time, Mike and I were in the midst of making a life altering decision. Do we stay in Vancouver, B.C. and continue to live the life we have known or do we liquidate and uproot ourselves embracing a whole new culture and lifestyle that we know nothing about? We chose the latter and are embracing the incredible tropical paradise of Bermuda, as home. We learned very quickly that it’s not all sunshine, clear aqua water and palm trees. Life happens with or without those little umbrellas in our drinks. 😉

I’ve come to believe that everything in life has its compromises. Along with the obvious benefits of living and working in the tropics, our new lifestyle has posed a certain amount of discomfort and adversity for both of us to traverse individually and together. Noticing that it’s often in these darker places when we find ourselves sourcing courage and taking risks, challenging self limiting beliefs, failing, being resilient, succeeding and resetting our paths to name a few of the mini journeys.  The Integration Process is re-visited regularly and checking in with Perspectives continue to be a gift.

A new year is upon us presenting an opportunity for a fresh start. Hopes and dreams, goals and objectives, expectations and accountabilities; call it what you want, for me, it presents an endless kaleidoscope of possibilities to create and design a resonant life in full color. Nigel Marsh’s TEDx video “How to make work life balance work” is a great place for getting curious and maybe a bit uncomfortable while setting some intentions for your next magical experience. December has been an introspective month for many of the clients and coachees I’m aligned with. As we reflected on experiences from the past year, we held a space for exploration. Owning ones journey and lessons learned speaks to being a leader in ones life; it’s where humility lives and in turn raises your level of consciousness as a leader.  Use this energy and time of year as your personal launchpad to design your magical experience of “what’s next.”

Great Leaders Grow Designing your life sound a bit overwhelming? Perhaps starting with the 3 questions posed by Ken Blanchard and Mark Miller in their book “Great Leaders GROW; Becoming a Leader for Life” may resonate:
         –  What will you keep doing?
         –  What will you stop doing?
         –  What will you start doing?

My greatest wish is that we all consciously choose to set the boundaries by which we view success and design and create our personal visions of what a life well lived looks like.

Transformation & The Space In Between…

Living in the Tropics; life and leadership lessons explored…

“You have to reject one expression of [the band] first, before you get to the next expression. In between you have nothing, you have to risk it all”    — Bono

Insert ‘your life’ or ‘your company’ for [the band] and it just brings goosebumps doesn’t it? This was such a powerful quote that esteemed filmmaker Davis Guggenheim positioned it twice in the U2 documentary “From the Sky Down.”

Relocating from Vancouver to Bermuda, I found myself in the space between in my search for a clearer picture of this new reality reflective of lifestyle choices. The gift was in slowing down and being present to heart, mind and body intelligence. However painful it felt and was for me; this traversing from one version of self to another, integrating change from the places of humility, gratitude, forgiveness, intuition, creativity and above all else, LOVE — a new map of life became clearer with each new day.

A favorite book that comes to mind is “hope for the flowers” by Trina Paulus. It is a story of hope and the integration process, within the space in between, as Stripe and Yellow journey from being caterpillars to butterflies.

The Integration process is about redrawing your map of life and filling the empty space with new meaning. With all things in life being impermanent, this process requires the need for you to rebuild confidence and develop acceptance and resilience. The secret of resilience is the ability to see a crisis, or space in between as an opportunity for a new beginning. Remember, a new beginning can only happen when the old form disintegrates.

Some questions you may ask when you find yourself exploring the space in between:

  • What have I learned?
  • How will I fill the space with meaning?
  • Who am I being?

Sometimes it’s not about letting go, it’s about letting it be. We can’t force the events in our lives; all we can do is be present to the flow. Even in the darkest hours of life—if we are truly present—joy shines in the depths…
